Total Eclipse Of The Sun (and much more)

Saturday, March 30, 2024, 2-4pm
Fellowship Hall in Danby's Community Church, 1859 Danby Road

There's a Total Eclipse of the Sun, visible from central New York, coming up on April 8. If you miss it, it'll be more than 50 years before you have a chance to see another from (near) home.

How do eclipses happen? How many kinds are there? How are they predicted? How do you watch them safely? All this, and more...

The Danby Community Council invites you to a presentation by Cornell's Spacecraft Planetary Imaging Facility (SPIF, who brought you the Mars Rover, the Helicopter, and more)  on Saturday, March 30, 2-4pm in Danby's Community Church.

Hope to see you there!

Earth Day
The Great 2024 Danby Road Cleanup

Sunday, April 21, 2024, 10:30am
Meet at the entrance to Dotson Park, 1825 Danby Road

(if you can't make it Sunday, when the weather will be marginally better), we will be there for you on Saturday:
Saturday, April 20, 2024, 10:30am
but, please, contact us if you're coming on Saturday:  [danbycleanup@tedcrane.com]

Bring the whole family! This activity is a great way to give to your community. It's a good excuse to get out and about on a warm (hopefully!) spring day. It's social and it's healthy, low-impact exercise, too.

We'd love to have RSVPs if you plan to attend but there will be plenty of supplies for everyone who shows up: bags, safety vests, and trash!

Most of the trash is small items. Be prepared to do a bit of bending (some people bring picker-upper tools). Waterproof boots keep your feet dry and gloves don't hurt. Don't forget that you're working alongside an active road, so wear bright colors and dress appropriately for the weather.

For more information, contact us at 607.319.3319 or [danbycleanup@tedcrane.com].

The 54th Earth Day is coming up!

Cleanup mostly recovers small, well-weathered trash items. You'd be amazed how many such small items are tossed out along the road! Small items are bagged up; the bags (and larger items) are left by the side of the road for pick up by the NYS Dep't of Transportation.

The group pickup covers a 2.2-mile stretch of downtown Danby. Flashy orange is the color of the day--safety vests are available and heavy-duty bags will be supplied--to volunteers. We'll meet at 10:30am in the Park-and-Ride lot of Dotson Park, across from Danby's Town Hall.

We'd love to have RSVPs if you plan to attend but there will be plenty of supplies for everyone who shows up: bags, safety equipment, and trash!

For more information, contact us at 607.319.3319 or [danbycleanup@tedcrane.com]. Pick-up walks are social and they're outdoors.

Death and the Maiden

Strong Quartet in D minor and the Cello Quintet in C major

The concert will take place on Saturday, April 27, 3pm in the Sanctuary of Danby's Community Church. Refreshments--along with an opportunity to interact with the musicians--will follow in the church's Fellowship Hall.

This program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants program from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature, and from Tompkins County, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.

Concert: The Harp

Saturday, April 27, 3pm
Fellowship Hall in Danby's Community Church, 1859 Danby Road

On Saturday May 4, at 3pm, Grace Scarpino-Stoutenburg brings her musical harp tour to Danby! This concert will take advantage of the special acoustics of the Sanctuary of Danby's Community Church. Refreshments will be served in the Fellowship hall. Along with the other concerts in the Community Council's concert series, this concert is especially good for the whole family.

Grace will give us a program she calls, The Evolution Of The Harp In Western Music. This mesmerizing journey will include everything from arrangements of medieval chants to music of the most modern era.

Through music and Grace's explanations, we'll learn about the origins of the harp in the ancient world and how it continues to be a vibrant instrument today. Expect to hear harp solo selections spanning more than four hundred years, from 1550-1990.

Given the nature of the instrument, and the acoustics of the sanctuary, we can promise that the sound will be ethereal and lovely.

This program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants program from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature, and from Tompkins County, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.
