Concert: Metku

Saturday, January 27, 2024, 3pm
Fellowship Hall in Danby's Community Church, 1859 Danby Road

The Community Council's first concert of the 2024 season will take place on Saturday, January 27, 3pm in the Fellowship Hall of the Danby Community Church, 1859 Danby Road (NYS Rt.96B opposite Bald Hill Road). The event features Metku, a Finnish-American performance ensemble.

Don't miss the opportunity to hear this extraordinary group of musicians, and hear some of the tunes brought to our region by Finnish immigrants.

In about 1910, when inexpensive farmland was for sale in the Finger Lakes, large numbers of Finns began migrating from small towns in Michigan and Minnesota to the Spencer-Van Etten area. They were hoping for a better way of life in the hills of the Finger Lakes. This trend lasted for several decades. The Finnish community became integral to Newfield and Danby.

The Danby Community Council concert series brings a variety of music—and musicians of great skill and diversity--to our rural community. We offer afternoon concerts, accessible to people of all ages and abilities.

Donations to cover refreshments and other incidentals are always welcome. We can also use volunteer assistance for setup and cleanup on concert afternoons. Contact Pamela Goddard at 607.342.4110 if you are able to help.

This program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants program from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature, and from Tompkins County, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.

Meet at the entrance to Dotson Park, 1825 Danby Road

Join a host o guides—the Dotson Park Board of Directors and local outdoor experts—to tour the parts of the park you can't see from the road. In other words, tour most of the park!

See the Natural Playground, the Hypar, the wetland, the Disc Golf Course, the Mound, the Trails, the Story Walk, the Bird Nests, ...and more.

This will be a guided walk around the park to learn the trails, enjoy the snowy landscape, and see what kind of wildlife we might be able to discover along the way. Dress warm, bring a hot beverage and any wildlife guides you may have as we embark on an exploration through the trees to see what we can discover.

The Danby Community Council invites you to a presentation by Cornell's Spacecraft Planetary Imaging Facility (SPIF, who brought you the Mars Rover, the Helicopter, and more)  on Saturday, March 30, 2-4pm in Danby's Community Church.

Earth Day
The Great 2024 Danby Road Cleanup

Saturday, April 20, 2024, 10:30am (rain date:  Sunday,4/21, 10am)
Meet at the entrance to Dotson Park, 1825 Danby Road

The 54th Earth Day is coming up! You can take part in the celebration right in Danby! On Saturday, 20-Apr-2024, 10:30am, join the not-quite-annual Earth Day Road Cleanup on NYS Rt.96B. Rain date on Sunday, April 21.

Bring the whole family! This activity is a great way to give to your community. It's a good excuse to get out and about on a warm (hopefully!) spring day. It's social and it's healthy low-impact exercise, too.

Cleanup mostly recovers small, well-weathered trash items. You'd be amazed how many such small items are tossed out along the road! Small items are bagged up; the bags (and larger items) are left by the side of the road for pick up by the NYS Dep't of Transportation.

The group pickup covers a 2.2-mile stretch of downtown Danby. Flashy orange is the color of the day--safety vests are available and heavy-duty bags will be supplied--to volunteers. We'll meet at 10:30am in the Park-and-Ride lot of Dotson Park, across from Danby's Town Hall.

We'd love to have RSVPs if you plan to attend but there will be plenty of supplies for everyone who shows up: bags, safety equipment, and trash!

For more information, contact us at 607.319.3319 or [danbycleanup@tedcrane.com]. Pick-up walks are social and they're outdoors.

Concert: String Quartet

This program is made possible in part with funds from the Statewide Community Regrants program from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of the office of the Governor and NYS Legislature, and from Tompkins County, administered by the Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County.
