Danby Candidate Forum

Saturday, June 5, 2021, 3:30pm, via the electronic magic of Zoom

If you missed the event, you can watch it on YouTube.

Danby voters will be making some important choices during the Democratic primary for local offices in June. Unless some last-minute independent or write-in candidates appear, the contested races will only be between Democrats. They’ll be decided by voting during a Primary Election: early voting (June 12-20 in the Board of Elections, 128 East Buffalo Street), absentee voting, and in-person voting on June 22, 6am-9pm, in the Danby and West Danby Fire Stations.

Democratic voters in Danby will choose from among five candidates—running for three contested “seats” in two offices—on the Primary ballot. An additional two offices are uncontested and those candidates will go directly to the November election ballot. How to sort out who is best for each position? One good way is to have them assemble in one venue and hear their statements and answers to questions submitted by voters. !e candidates for the Town’s contested positions (Town Councilperson and Town Highway Superintendent) have been invited to participate in a moderated Virtual Candidate Forum. All voters, regardless of political affiliation, are welcome to join the audience.

The Danby Community Council is pleased to be able to facilitate this informative Forum. The Virtual Forum will be moderated and run by the League of Women Voters of Tompkins County (LWVTC) via Zoom on Saturday, June 5, 3:30-5pm. It’ll be divided into two periods, first for the Councilpersons, and the second for the Highway Superintendent.

A link to the Zoom event (when available) will appear above. It'll also be on the LWVTC web site, [], which we encourage you to visit. A recording of the Forum will be posted online by the LWVTC following the event.

All participants have agreed to guidelines established by the LWVTC. The event format will include a 1-minute opening statement by each candidate, a question and answer period, and 2-minute closing statements. Questions may be submitted ahead of time by Email to [] or via Zoom chat during the event. Questions will be reviewed by the LWVTC and selected based on relevancy to the office and topic.

We hope a good many Danby residents will take advantage of these two opportunities. It is truly the nitty gritty of the democratic process.

If you missed the event, you can watch it on YouTube.

The Danby Community Council is pleased to present a short program entitled, Growth and Transformation at the End of Life on Sunday, June 6, 3pm, via Zoom.

Angela Mennitto, speaker, has given us several informative and interesting programs in the recent past. She is a death midwife who also organizes community events to promote death literacy and to normalize conversations about death and dying.

She will invite us to consider what a good death might look like for each of us and share a few stories from her experiences with others at the end of their lives and how they inspired her.

Death is inevitable. We can’t change that fact. We can change our relationship to it. We can bring death out of the closet. Contemplate it. Talk about it. Plan for it. Allow it to inform the way we live—the choices we make.
